It can be difficult to ask for help while wondering whether you can afford to continue. Cost belongs in the first conversation. You can ask directly about the fee, the likely out-of-pocket amount, and options if the quoted cost is beyond your budget.

Four places to look

  1. County services: Santa Clara County and San Mateo County offer behavioral health access pathways. Start with the county where you live and ask about eligibility, coverage, language needs, and available services.
  2. A supervised training clinic: PAU Community Clinic describes sliding-scale services. Ask who would provide your care, how supervision works, and whether the clinic can meet your needs.
  3. Youth and school-linked services: allcove, ACS, and school support teams may offer relevant access pathways. Age, enrollment, and program requirements vary.
  4. Provider assistance: CHC publishes financial assistance information, and Feeling Good Institute describes a lower-fee option. Ask about the current fee and waitlist rather than assuming immediate availability.

If you plan to use insurance

Call the member services number on your card. Ask whether the specific clinician and practice are in network for your exact plan, whether a deductible applies, what you would owe for each visit, and whether authorization or a referral is required.

A provider’s participation with an insurer does not establish your individual benefit. For out-of-network care, ask what the plan allows, what documentation it needs, and whether reimbursement is available at all. A superbill does not guarantee payment.

A short script for asking about cost

“I’m looking for ongoing support, and cost is part of what I need to plan for. What would I pay per session? Do you have a sliding scale, financial assistance, or a referral option if that amount is out of reach?”

Compare the full arrangement

Consider the session fee alongside travel, time off work, childcare, visit frequency, and whether online care is suitable and available. Before beginning, ask for a clear explanation of fees and cancellation terms.

Use the directory’s cost filter to explore the available pathways. Each listing links to the organization’s own information.
